You won’t be surprised to know that we don’t have a SAF refinery tucked away in our back office. Instead, we use our trusted suppliers, Neste and SQUAKE, to manage the end-to-end process of getting SAF into operation on your behalf. This end-to-end process includes the production of SAF, transporting it to the airport and putting it directly into the airplanes. To make sure there’s complete visibility across the whole process, SQUAKE provides us with all the documentation to show that every litre of SAF has been traced from start to finish, which we can then pass on to you.

This partnership is about more than just logistics and getting SAF from A to B. The collaboration between these three renowned brands serves as a powerful message to the aviation industry, highlighting the momentum and demand for innovative solutions that can fast-track the decarbonization of air travel. 

New to SAF? Here’s everything you need to know:

• What is SAF?
  SAF is a renewable aviation fuel (also known as biofuel) that provides a sustainable alternative to conventional, fossil based jet fuel that goes into airplanes today. In the short to medium term, it is the only solution that can help the aviation sector achieve its emission reduction goals.
  
  
• What goes into making SAF?
  Fats, oils and greases (FOGs) are the current leading source for the production of SAF. This could be, for example, used cooking oil or fish and animal residues from industrial processes. 
  
  
• How does SAF reduce emissions?
  SAF reuses waste materials from renewable sources, as opposed to jet fuel which is refined from crude oil. The way it works is that the fuel is burnt (as it would be in any automobile), but the carbon that’s emitted is then reabsorbed through biomass, which is then turned into fuel again. 
  
  
• Why is SAF so expensive?
  SAF is roughly two to four times more expensive than conventional jet fuel because the production process is far more intensive than regular fuel, but that’s only because there’s not enough demand right now. It’s the chicken and the egg. More demand = more volume = lower prices. It’s called economies of scale!
  
  
• Why do we need to invest in SAF?
  SAF could contribute up to 65% of the emissions reductions needed by the aviation sector to hit net-zero by 2050. And while there are developments happening with hydrogen airplanes, we need a solution here and now. By providing a plug-and-play solution for our clients, Goodwings is helping to drive demand for a solution that can reshape the business travel sector.
