The webinar "The great climate quick fix - an illusion?" featured Professor Katherine Richardson,  and Goodwings CEO and founder Christian Møller-Holst, in a discussion about the hope for a technological climate quick fix, and why we must reduce and remove emissions now. A quick technological fix for climate change?

We are becoming increasingly reliant on technical solutions for solving our everyday problems. Digitalizing our daily lives in the midst of a pandemic has made going to work, attending school and keeping social a possibility for many of us - but can we rely on technology to solve the climate crisis as well? And more importantly, will technological solutions be enough to solve the climate crisis before global warming reaches +1,5 degrees?

Do we have a problem?

Having been a witness to major technological breakthroughs like developing a COVID-vaccine and distributing it in only 9 months, or landing on Mars, might amplify our belief in our ability as humans to solve complex problems with technology, if we set our minds to it - so are the problems of biodiversity loss and temperature increase we are experiencing, unsolvable?

How do we redefine growth?

Both the tech and the travel industry are heavily focused on growth and even exponential growth, in the traditional sense. The big question is, do we need to change our perception of growth, to make these industries, and our society more sustainable?
According to Katherine Richardson, we could learn a thing or two from micro-organisms and ecosystems when it comes to changing our trajectory and creating sustainable growth.

Changing patterns and changing technology

We're all coming to understand that the way we live now, is not sustainable. Whether we're traveling, buying clothes, food, furniture, or driving around in a sports car. When talking about planetary boundaries and having to change our patterns, it's sometimes hard to grasp what the best-case, sustainable future might look like - in this anecdote, Katherine sheds some light on our future consumption patterns.

Becoming aware of our footprint

So what's the first step towards changing our habits and enabling sustainable growth? Just like we need to redefine our perception of growth, we need to change our perception of the earth's resources. Getting to know our environmental footprint gives us an insight into our spending, and like every other economy, the economy of earth's resources is not limitless.
